Winchester College Case Study: Modern Canopy Enhances Historic Playground

A contemporary canopy in a historic setting

As one of the oldest and most prestigious independent schools in the country, Winchester College is a place where centuries of history meet modern education. When the College sought to enhance the outdoor play facilities for its younger pupils, it turned to Kensington Systems for a high-quality covered outdoor space that would complement its historic surroundings.

A Spaceshade canopy was selected for its clean, contemporary design, with the aluminium framework specially powder-coated in a subtle grey-green finish to blend sympathetically with the existing buildings. The result is a striking example of how modern architecture can sit comfortably alongside centuries-old heritage.

Working within such a historically significant setting brought a unique set of challenges. The playground itself is situated on a designated ancient burial ground, meaning an archaeologist had to be present during the excavation of the canopy foundations to monitor for any discoveries of historical interest. Combined with extremely restricted site access, the installation required careful planning, coordination and a flexible approach from the Kensington Systems team.

In addition to the canopy itself, Kensington Systems installed a new rubber crumb playground surface and an integrated drainage system, delivering a complete outdoor solution. Every element of the project had to be carefully coordinated and carried out with sensitivity to the College's historic environment.

Despite these challenges, Kensington Systems successfully delivered a beautifully integrated Spaceshade canopy, creating a versatile, year-round covered outdoor space for the College's younger pupils. The canopy provides reliable protection from the elements, while the rubber crumb surfacing offers a safe, practical and durable surface for everyday play. The integrated drainage system helps manage rainwater effectively, keeping the space functional throughout the changing seasons.

With its robust construction, carefully considered colour scheme and timeless design, the finished installation blends seamlessly with its historic surroundings while providing a high-quality, low-maintenance outdoor environment that will serve Winchester College for many years to come.
