As part of a recent refurbishment and new-build programme, the school worked with Kensington Systems to install a series of canopies across the site - creating sheltered outdoor spaces that pupils can access reliably throughout the year, whatever the weather.

The brief was shaped by a clear therapeutic intent. For children with SEND, consistent access to outdoor space plays a meaningful role in supporting wellbeing: time outside has been shown to improve focus, ease anxiety and encourage communication - benefits that are especially significant for pupils who may find the indoor environment overwhelming.

The canopies give staff the flexibility to offer outdoor time as a genuine, year-round tool for self-regulation and calm, rather than something weather-dependent and unpredictable.

Safety was central to the specification. Kensington Systems' canopies were selected in part for the features that make them particularly well-suited to a SEND environment: concealed bolts and fixings eliminate potential hazards and reduce the risk of fixation or interference, while the integrated drainage system protects gutters and downpipes from damage and is designed to discourage climbing.

The certified non-fragile roof provides an additional layer of reassurance for a school where the safety of every detail matters. The result is a set of outdoor spaces that staff, pupils and parents can trust - and that the children at Briarwood can genuinely make their own.
