The city of Bristol has nearly 130 infant, junior and primary schools, alongside three secondaries plus three sixth-form centres and a couple of colleges. It also offers one of the country’s highest numbers of private school places, including at the prestigious Badminton School and Clifton College.
According to the Sunday Times’ Parent Power guide, as reported near the end of last year, the Bristol area has eight of the UK’s top secondary schools. And with two local universities, and particular links with the sciences and engineering, it’s a thriving place for education.
Clearly, as well as the right academic and teaching resources, all these institutions need to have the best infrastructure in place so that they run smoothly, allowing students can focus on learning. School canopies create a safe, sturdy environment and mean outdoor activities can be integrated into the timetable, with protection from the elements all year round.

Bristol School Canopy Case studies
Among the numerous institutions we’ve worked with in the Bristol area are:
- Warmley Park School, which teaches pupils aged 3-19 who have a range of learning and other difficulties, or additional needs including sensory impairments and physical disabilities. Three of our external canopies here provide flexible, year-round outdoor learning space, while a tensile fabric structure offers shade on the school field.
We also supplied roller and rooflight blinds plus a wooden bike shelter.
- At St Joseph’s Catholic Primary, just a few miles north-east of the city centre, we helped when the school needed a covered space for outdoor dining, play and learning. We worked with a local building surveyor to provide a significant amount of additional covered space. We also handled groundworks, waste disposal and resurfacing to provide a start-to-finish service.
- Perry Court Primary, rated as one of the city’s top schools, was recently expanded to meet demand. We installed three canopies here for al fresco recreation and classes. Because these are off of the side of the building, pupils can move seamlessly between this covered space and their classrooms.
- Downend School is a suburban Bristol secondary and sixth form with academy status, located in South Gloucestershire. Here, we built a freestanding aluminium canopy, in a good example of how you can provide these facilities without attaching them to an existing building.
